DJI Mavic 2 Pro review – still worth it in 2020

DJI Mavic 2 Pro review – still worth it in 2020?

DJI released its Mavic 2 Pro back in 2018 with an impressive feature set for the size and price. Two years on in 2020 and a few months before the DJI Mavic 3 will be released, is the Mavic 2 Pro still worth it? Let’s take a look and see if it still lives up to the hype it created back in 2018 with this review.

Is DJI’s Mavic 2 Pro still worth it in 2020?

The DJI Mavic 2 Pro brought a big improvement to the Mavic line with the introduction of a 20 MP 1-inch sensor to the world of folding drones. The Mavic 2 Pro also brought along a full 360-degree array of vision sensors, a sleeker more refined design, improved camera quality with 10-bit Dlog-M, 10-bit HDR Video and an adjustable aperture.

Since the DJI Mavic 3 is rumored to be coming out in the first half of this year, we took a look at the Mavic 2 Pro to see how it holds up three years later. Spoiler, the short answer is yes.

I’m incredibly impressed with the Mavic 2 Pro images. Hasselblad seems to produce the same stunning quality wherever they apply their magic, be it medium-format studio cameras, or amazingly attached to the nimble wings of a Mavic.Benjamin Everett is a traveling artist who is passionate about the relationship between our literal and figurative experiences with the scenery. Pros in 2020

General flight

The DJI Mavic 2 Pro is still snappy while flying and great fun to fly around. Mavic 2 Pro still has great responsiveness to stick inputs and maintains a great connection to the controller in both controlling the drone and receiving a live feed from the camera. The batteries included with the drone still can provide a flight time of around 24 minutes, just under what we were able to get when first receiving the drone.

Camera quality

While the camera quality appears in both the pros and the cons for its age, it is still a great camera to be flying within 2020. The camera is capable of 4K video 20 MP photos, high-quality slow-motion video, and cool features like the Hyperlapse mode.

DJI GO 4

The DJI GO 4 app, while a little outdated in design compared to the DJI Fly app, it is still a great and powerful app to use. GO 4 still has all the major features wanted while flying and keeps the pilot updated with all the vital information of the drone. It’s likely, the next iteration of the app is coming with the launch of the DJI Mavic 3 series.

Cons in 2020

Obstacle avoidance

DJI’s obstacle avoidance has always been top-notch compared to other companies on the market. That was until Skydio released its Skydio 2 late last year. The Mavic 2 Pro’s obstacle avoidance is a very static system, where it detects an object and will either stop or try to figure its way around the obstacle.

Camera quality

Previously mentioned, the camera is still great for 2020, but it does lack a few features. The Mavic 2 Pro camera is capable of 4 K video, while the latest drone from Autel Robotics is capable of 6 K video with a 1-inch sensor like the Mavic 2 Pro. The MP is also higher on the latest drones, although higher MP doesn’t necessarily mean the photos will be better. The higher resolution footage does mean cropping and zooming at 6 K or 8 K will mean better-looking footage.

Internal storage

The Mavic 2 Pro came with 8 GB of internal storage, at the time and now it’s not enough to do much with. Sure, when flying you will put your SD card in, but for those times when you might forget it, 8 GB won’t get you far. 32 GB of internal storage would be a great back up to have when flying, with or without an SD card inserted.

No doubt, the DJI Mavic 2 Pro is still a great purchase, especially with the discounts coming when the Mavic 3 comes out later this year. The camera still holds up fairly well for its age, and the ability to take photos in RAW is a big plus.

The Mavic 2 Pro can be picked up right now from DJI, starting at $1599.00 with an option to add the DJI Smart Controller. Amazon has the Mavic 2 Pro available, starting at $1,589.99 with various bundles available as well.
