John is an aerial photographer that gained interested in it in his high school photography class, this pushed him to buy his first camera, the Canon 60D, and eventually a drone, the DJI Mavic Pro. Aerial photography is all John currently does along with his job at Fox Sports Australia as a digital content producer.
The world is full of amazing photographers, videographers and drone pilots, this can be seen throughout Instagram and various other social media platforms. Today we got the pleasure of asking John Dean a few questions about him and how he came to do what he does today.
How did you first get into photography and drones?
I first got into photography back in high school where I briefly studied it as a subject. I picked it up again years later as a hobby when I bought my first camera – a Canon 60D. I continued that for a few years until DJI released the first Mavic Pro, so I decided to jump in the deep end and give the aerial genre a crack. I’ve been almost exclusively shooting with my drone for nearly two years now.
Has photography helped you through a hard time?
Because photography is still very much a hobby for me, it’s the perfect outlet away from my day job to totally change focus and do something I’m just as passionate about. It’s also helped me meet a whole new community of people I’d otherwise never have experienced.
What is one thing photography has taught you over the years?
It doesn’t matter where you live, if you’ve got a passion for photography, you can still practice and take amazing shots. You don’t need to be a travel blogger or someone that goes on trips to exotic destinations to produce content that satisfies you and your audience. Look in your backyard and around neighbourhood because I guarantee you’ll find something special.

What would you say to people who are thinking about or are too scared to show off their work?
Just do it. Don’t be afraid to have a go or ask for advice. Surround yourself with people who encourage you and give you constructive criticism in order to improve your skills.
Who inspires you?
I love popular YouTube creators like Casey Neistat and Peter McKinnon, not just because of their content but because their enthusiasm is infectious. But I feel like you can take inspiration from anyone in your genre who is excited about their creation process. Jump on Instagram and YouTube and have a browse.
