Andrew is a self-made drone pilot, vlogger and business owner who started out in photography 11 years ago when he stumbled across his parents’ happy snap camera. Ever since Andrew has been sharing his amazing work with the world and has recently taken flight in the FPV drone community.
The world is full of amazing photographers, videographers and drone pilots, this can be seen throughout Instagram and various other social media platforms. Today we got the pleasure of asking Andrew Murphy a few questions about him and how he came to do what he does today.
How did you first get into photography and drones?
I first started photography about 11 years ago when I found my parents happy snap camera and started going out and taking macro photos of trees and flower (as I think everyone has done at some point). Then got into drones 5 years ago, but only in the last 12 months have I gotten back into it with a DJI Mavic Air, then upgraded to the Mavic 2 Pro for more commercial work. I got into FPV only 2 months ago, but have been interested in it for about 12 months.
Has photography helped you through a hard time?
Photography is seriously the ultimate way to express myself personally. I find by showing someone an image or a video, they get what i’m trying to convey way better than me trying to explain it with words. It is also a fantastic tool to meet other creatives and make friends with awesome people who love the hobby as well.
What is one thing photography has taught you over the years?
Photography has definitely taught me about patience. Especially when I found out how good golden hour light looks and how much it affects the look of your images. This definitely taught me a lot of patience, as you only get 2 hours a day with this light (which is super DUPER frustrating) and if you don’t get the shot you want in time, you then have to wait till the next day and hope the conditions are still okay.

What would you say to people who are thinking about or are too scared to show off their work?
I’d say with Instagram and social media, it is easier than ever to share your work off to the world, but it also means that the whole world could potentially rip you to shreds about your work as well. More often than not though, the feedback you would get by sharing your work, far out-ways the risk of never ever posting it up and potentially missing out on opportunities that you would have never gotten, if you hadn’t shared your work. But owning your work, being proud of it, and be excited to share it with others,100% sparks more creativity in you and helps you grow your skills, then if you just keep it all hidden away.
Who inspires you?
My biggest inspirations at the moment are Potato Jet (Youtuber) for video production, Julis Kahkonen (@visualsofjulius) for epic photography/compositions and would have to say Steele Davis (@mrsteelefpv) for FPV Drone stuff, his runs are so buttery!!
