The DJI Mavic Air 2 is officially out with some great spec upgrades over the original Mavic Air and even outperforming the bigger DJI Mavic 2 Pro in various areas. The Mavic Air 2 is equipped with a 1/2″ inch sensor capable of 4k 60fps, 48MP photos, and HDR. The new Mavic Air 2 also comes with OcuSync 2.0 and ActiveTrack 3.0.

At 11:30 am AEST DJI released its latest product into the world (and Australia), the DJI Mavic Air 2 with nothing more than a YouTube video due to the COVID-19 situation.

The new DJI Mavic Air 2 comes packed with some impressive specs. The Mavic Air 2 has a 1/2′ sensor capable of 4k 60fps video, 48MP photos, HDR photos and video, and 8k hyperlapses. The Mavic Air 2 comes with a 3500mAh battery giving it a flight time of 34 minutes, while the controller has a 240-minute battery life.

The inclusion of OcuSync 2.0 gives the drone a maximum control distance of 10km at resolution of 1080p 30fps. APAS 3.0 obstacle avoidance is also present in the Mavic Air 2.

The Mavic Air 2 comes with DJI’s latest set of autonomous flight modes, ActiveTrack 3.0, Point of Interest 3.0, and Spotlight 2.0 which was originally only found on the Inspire 2. ActiveTrack 3.0 has been updated to be a better competitor to the Skydio 2.

  • ActiveTrack 3.0: Select a subject for Mavic Air 2 to automatically follow. The third iteration of ActiveTrack uses state-of-the-art mapping technology and new flight path algorithms to offer improved subject tracking and obstacle avoidance, along with the ability to quickly re-engage the subject if it temporarily moves behind an object.
  • Point of Interest 3.0: Set an automated flight path around a specific subject. The updated iteration improves surface recognition to better dynamically track subjects.
  • Spotlight 2.0: Found in professional DJI drones, Spotlight locks a subject in the frame while the user has free operation of the drone’s movement.

The Mavic Air 2 includes three new smart modes to make capturing the perfect shots even easier than before with automatic HDR photos, Hyperlight (low-light photos), and scene recognition to optimize the images.

  • HDR photos: Mavic Air 2 automatically captures seven varying exposures of the same photograph, merging them together to bring out a high dynamic image.
  • Hyperlight: Hyperlight is designed for low-light scenarios, taking multiple photographs and merging them to bring out a clear image with less of the noise which usually occurs in low-light scenes.
  • Scene Recognition: Mavic Air 2 can recognize five categories of scenes including sunsets, blue skies, grass, snow, and trees, then optimize settings to make the photograph pop by bringing out the highest degree of colour, detail, and tones.

The DJI Mavic Air can be picked up here in Australia for $1499 and $1899 for the fly more combo, which includes two extra batteries, an extra set of propellers, battery charging hub, power bank adapter, shoulder bag, and a set of ND filters (ND16,64,256). Shipping to Australia is estimated to take around 10-15 days after the payment has been confirmed.
