We got our hands on the Skullcandy Indy Evo to review for a little over a week and so far, are liking what the midrange wireless earbuds have to offer. The Indy Evo’s come in at AUD$179.95 ($79.99) and are impressive for the price point. Let’s dive in and take a deep look at the wireless earbuds.
In the package
The Skullcandy Indy Evo comes with a USB-C charging cable, two extra pairs of small and large earbuds, an extra pair of ear hooks and the carrying and charging case of course.
The important bits
The Skullcandy Indy Evo’s has a battery life of six hours and can be charged with the case proving them with 24 more hours of play time. In testing I was able to get pretty close to these numbers. The buds are also able to provide you with sound for two hours off a 10-mintue charge.The sound coming from the Indy Evo’s is what I expected to see from earbuds at this price point. They sound pretty good for the size and they block out most of the noise when the volume is above 40%. The bass is a little heavy with the mids and treble sounding clear.The earbuds fit great in my ears, but I find the pole to be annoying at times when it rubs against my cheek when moving. This might just be with me though. The touch sensitive controls on the side are easy to use but don’t seem as responsive as my Galaxy Buds from Samsung, but those are almost two times the price. The case is a great size and is definitely pocketable and isn’t too noticeable when walking around or sitting with the case in my pocket.
The Indy Evo’s come with ambient mode allowing you to hear the sound around you using the mics. It works great and does exactly what it’s advertised to do. The buds also come with three listening modes, music, movie, and podcast. I was never able to switch between the two but from what I can tell they are specific EQs to make music, movies, and podcasts sound better.
USB-C, but no wireless charging
It is great to see the inclusion of USB-C as it is getting annoying buying a product and it to come with Micro-USB., so great job on that one Skullcandy! Something I expect with all wireless earbuds is for the case to be able to wirelessly charge. This is not a big deal but a nice to have instead of having to plug it in to charge all the time. I feel like wireless charging goes perfectly with wireless earbuds due to the small battery size and how fast they can charge.
Find them with Tile
When I first saw the headphones featured Tile in them, I thought it would be one of those gimmicks you try once and never again. When I tried it though, it was impressive. You lose your earbuds, open the Tile app, and walk around until you find it with the help of a guide showing how far away you are.Two things to note though. The Tile functionality is only in the left earbud so if you do not have the two together good luck finding the right one. To use the finding functionality, you are required to download the Tile app even though there is a Skullcandy app already, this might not be an issue if you already use Tile. It would be great to have it packed all into one app.
Skullcandy app
Many companies introduce companion apps with their products to provide a richer experience with the product. This is something Skullcandy seems to be lacking in with the Indy Evo. While using the app the only feature that you can use in it is ambient mode which can also be activated on the earbuds themselves. The app also tells you what listening mode you are in, but you aren’t able to change it.I would like to see the listening modes to be changeable within the app and possibly have the Tile integration right in the app so those that don’t use Tile don’t have to download another app. It would also be nice to be able to change the tap settings of the earbuds.
The verdict
Overall, the Skullcandy Indy Evo wireless buds are a great pickup for anyone wanting to enter the world of wireless audio. They sound great for the price and have a simple interface that works after a little getting used to. The battery lives up to the tests and you will likely only be charging these once a week depending on how much you use them.You can pick the buds up right now for AUD$179.99 or if you are in the US you can pick them up for $79.99.
