DJI appears to be working on a substantial safety update for the DJI Mavic 3 series of drones. The update includes the ability to view live footage from the vision sensors to better understand the obstacles in flight.

Which Mavic 3 drones will get the update?

According to a leaked slide from DJI, the following drones in the Mavic 3 series will receive the update:

  • DJI Mavic 3
  • DJI Mavic 3 Cine
  • DJI Mavic 3 Classic
  • DJI Mavic 3 Pro
  • DJI Mavic 3 Pro Cine

The update is reportedly coming on today, September 5th, but we are yet to see the update release on our side.

Flight Assistance Imaging

The first new feature allows the fisheye lenses used for obstacle sensing on the front, back, and sides to be shown during flight to enhance flight safety and allow pilots to see obstacles in the blind spots.

There are three main modes that will use this new feature, fly around, telephoto, and night flights.

Fly Around

In fly around the cameras on the side of the drone will be displayed, allowing the pilot to spot potential obstacles as they get closer to the drone.

Telephoto

While the telephoto lens is in use, the forward-facing camera will be displayed to give the pilot a better view of what’s ahead in the event that there is an obstacle outside the field of view of the telephoto lens.

Night flights

During night flights, the cameras can be used to detect bright objects that could be potential obstacles. As its too dark for objects to be detected, bright spots in the image are used.

AR Return

AR return displays an overlay over the main camera of the drone, allowing the pilot to get a better understanding of the path the drone will take to the landing position. It will also place a mark on the ground as it begins to land.

Landing Protection Switch

Flying in certain conditions, such as cloud or heavy fog and moving objects can cause the landing position system to get confused. Pilots can now turn this feature off to manually land the drone.

This feature must be used with caution.

Screen Masking Assistance

When taking a photo or video, a mask will be added to the display to assist with composition, ensuring the objects are in the frame of the video or photo.

D-Log M and HLG modes

The telephoto cameras now have improved colour modes for post-processing. The 7x telephoto lens now supports 10-bit D-Log M and HLG colour modes.

New telephoto features

The 3x mid-range telephoto lens on the Mavic 3 Pro and Mavic 3 Pro Cine now has nighttime video, master shots, one-tap short films, and spherical panorama enabled.
