Matt joined the photography world when he took a trip to Iceland 3 years ago with a GoPro in his pocket. Seeing the views from Iceland made Matt want to get a DSLR camera and then just this year a DJI Mavic Air.
The world is full of amazing photographers, videographers and drone pilots, this can be seen throughout Instagram and various other social media platforms. Today we got the pleasure of asking Matt Benham a few questions about him and how he came to do what he does today.
How did you first get into photography and drones?
I got into photography after I had a trip to Iceland around 3 years ago. At that time I wasn’t interested in photography at all. Just before I went I got a GoPro so I could get some snapshots of the trip. This is where the love for photography started. Seeing some of the amazing places around Iceland made me want to get a DSLR camera and visit more locations. A few years on I can’t get enough of photography trips. Getting a drone last year has opened up even more photo opportunities and this year I hope to take advantage of that with upcoming trips to Scotland and Snowdonia.
Has photography helped you through a hard time?
Whenever I feel stressed or feel down photography always helps. as soon as I’m on location surrounded by amazing landscapes all work related stress and bad feelings disappear. There is something very relaxing being out with the camera. I highly recommend if you’re ever feeling stressed to just get out and go to a beautiful quiet place, even if it isn’t for photography!
What is one thing photography has taught you over the years?
The main thing photography has taught me is to slow down and appreciate the moment. Not only through photography but life in general.
What would you say to people who are thinking about or are too scared to show off their work?
DO IT. At first it may seem scary but its the best way to learn and build confidence (no bad comment is a bad comment. use it to improve on the next photo). Getting feedback from professionals really helped me improve the way I shoot. Also getting positive feedback will grow your confidence as a photographer. That fear will soon disappear and turn into excitement showing people your work.
Who inspires you?
Mads Pete Iversen a Danish landscape photographer is my biggest photography inspiration. Hi’s passion for photography really shows on his vlogs and i have learnt a lot from him. If you’re just starting out I highly recommend finding him on YouTube.
